5 Feeding Tricks around Your Elderly Loved One’s Nausea

Nausea and vomiting are the two most common side effects of cancer treatment.  Other causes for nausea include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, electrolyte imbalance, anxiety, constipation, bowel obstruction, constipation, brain cancer, inner ear problems, anxiety, other diseases, and anticipation of vomiting in association with odors or mealtimes.  If you have a loved one who is currently undergoing cancer treatment, A-1 Home Care in Laguna Beach lists some ways to combat nausea:

  • Minimize the odor of foods in the environment. If you are cooking, have her stay somewhere, maybe upstairs or the farthest room down the hall where she cannot smell the aroma that might trigger her vomiting.
  • Let her eat what she wants. Many cancer patients prefer light foods like fruit, vegetables and a light sandwich – anything that doesn’t stir up an aroma during preparation.
  • For beverages, give your elderly loved one some hot tea or hot water. Ginger by itself or added to the tea/hot water may also help reduce nausea.
  • Feed her when she’s hungry. This sounds like common sense, but oftentimes if she doesn’t want to eat, you cannot force her, so you have to be attentive to any open window that will allow you to feed her when she wants to eat.
  • Give her some Orgain products, like nutritional protein shakes or meal powder. This line of products was designed by the founder who is a trained medical doctor and cancer survivor.

a-1 home care elder care long beachIt is no mystery that seniors with Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease or other health conditions that limit mobility are not getting out enough.  As such, decreased activity outside the house also decreases exposure to the sun, which could help lower your elderly loved one’s blood pressure and ultimately, improve their cardiac health.  Are you concerned that your loved ones are not getting enough exercise because of pain in the joints?  A-1 Home Care has a wonderful team of certified in-home care professionals in Laguna Beach and surrounding areas who will help your loved ones manage their pain while maximizing their physical activity levels all around.

24 Hour In-Home Care Relief for Higher Hour Caregivers

a-1 home care dementiaThe National Alliance for Caregiving defines “higher hour caregivers” as those who support an elderly loved one for at least 21 hours a week, averaging 63 hours per week.  The typical higher hour caregiver is a female caring for a senior who is dependent upon others to provide assistance with daily living activities, such as bathing, cooking and toileting care.  If the family caregiver does work, she averages 33 hours a week in addition to her weekly duties of caring for an elderly loved one.  When you add responsibilities of caring for one’s under-age children, a spouse, self-care and other, you can only imagine the toll this takes on your health.  If you are a high hour caregiver reading this article, A-1 Home Care in Laguna Beach has good news for you.

Laguna Beach Home Care: Scientific Research Upholds Benefits of Massage Therapy for the Elderly

a-1 home careIt’s no mystery that massages feel great, but now scientists have proof that massage therapy has its medical justifications.  According to research published in the February edition of Science Translational Medicine, biopsies were taken from eleven males before, during and after their exercise.  Results showed that “massage dampened the expression of inflammatory cytokines in the muscle cells and promoted biogenesis of mitochondria, which are the energy-producing units in the cells,” says Dr. Simon Melov of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging.  On average, 18 million Americans undergo massage therapy, an alternative method to reducing chronic pain and improving range of motion, according to an online source.  If you are looking for an in-home caregiver with a background in physical therapy, you’ve come to the right place at A-1 Home Care in Laguna Beach.

A-1 Home Care recruits Orange County’s best caregivers with a wide range of professional skills.  You get to choose from certified home health aides, certified nurse assistants (CNAs), companion care aides, hospice care aides, domestic service workers, licensed vocational nurses (LVNs), and caregivers with backgrounds in physical therapy.  A-1 Home Care has caregivers who live in Laguna Beach or your local area who are available 24 hours a day or several hours a day.  Does your elderly loved one suffer from Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, cancer or some other chronic inflammatory disease?  Then he or she will greatly benefit from a daily therapeutic massage as well as assistance with daily chores.

Laguna Beach Home Care: Reduce Risks and Restore Balance for Stroke Patients

Are you feeling a little out of balance or do you notice any changes in your physical state, such as numbness, weakness in limbs, or difficulty with swallowing?  These symptoms may be signs that you are at risk for a vertebrobasilar stroke, which occurs in the back region of the brain where locomotion and balance are controlled.  According to a study, vertebrobasilar strokes account for almost 40% of all strokes, causing partial or total paralysis.  Researchers at the University of Illinois say that once you’ve had a stroke in the back area of the brain, you are likely to have another one within two years. Take advantage of A-1 Home Care’s expertise in responding to stroke incidents in the home.  The quicker the response, the less likely your elderly loved one will have long-term neurological damage.

In order for your home to have the optimal impact on your loved one’s recovery from stroke, it’s crucial to have the right level of care and adequate support at home.  If you are the main provider for your family, you probably may not be able to request time off from work to take care of your elderly loved one.   This is where A-1 Home Care comes in.  In-home care is one of the cheapest and most preferred types of elder care among seniors, because they get to enjoy recovery in the comfort of their own home while receiving quality, professional help from caregivers.  A-1 Home Care in Laguna Beach recruits only the most talented, skilled and compassionate caregivers in Orange County.

A-1 Home Care is a licensed, bonded and insured agency that works hard to provide you the best possible in-home care in Orange County.  For 24 years, A-1 Home Care has been exceeding expectations of families in Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Tustin, Villa Park, Yorba Linda, Fullerton and other neighboring cities.  The advantage of hiring a 24-hour caregiver from a licensed, bonded and insured agency is that we do all the criminal background checks for you.  We handle the caregivers’ payroll and resolve any problems so that customer satisfaction is 100% guaranteed all the time.  We are open 365 days of the year, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Arts and Crafts Event at Downey Care Center

Back in 2013 we began having arts and crafts events, but these events occurred sparingly.  That is why for 2014, we want to have them as much as possible.  Not only do we want to continue showing our community that we genuinely care, but it also is also a rewarding experience.  A-1 Home Care wants to continue being involved in the communities around us, which is why we held our first arts and craft event of the year at Downey Care Center.

In our past few events we had the seniors and elderly in attendance decorate Christmas ornaments, but with Valentine’s Day nearing we figured decorating a bookmark would be a fantastic idea.  With us we brought glue, glitter, markers and stickers for decorating purposes.  We went into the event hoping that at least one person would show, but instead we had about thirty people show up.  From the smiles that lit the room up from side to side, we can safely say that everyone in attendance had an amazing time.  Each and every bookmark turned out amazing; better than some of our staff members.  Not enough people can take time out of their day to spend some quality time with seniors or elderly, and we hope that soon enough more people will be able to do so.  Being able to spend time with seniors and elderly has been an eye opening, and the memories that have been created at these events will surely last us a life time.

DSCN1005

With two helping hands and a golden heart we are slowly making an impact on more and more people.  From the bottom of all of our staff members, we appreciate each and everyone for attending our arts and craft event.  We look forward to our next event which takes place on February 11th at Parnell Senior Center.  If some of you cannot attend, do not worry, there are more events lined up.

Contact us today for more information on our events or services at (949) 650-38000, or you may visit http://www.lagunabeachinhomecare.com/ for more info. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter!

Living with Parkinson’s Disease

One of the most frustrating aspects of Parkinson’s disease is that there is no known cure. However, medical advances have remarkably help those who have been struck with this horrible disease to ease their symptoms.  Other ways to ease symptoms includes eating a nutritional and balanced diet, engaging in exercises that will strengthen affected muscle groups, as well as utilizing an occupational therapist to alternate the methods of daily routines that can make those with Parkinson’s difficult to live a normal life.  In all these cases, it is best to consult your physicians beforehand.

A-1 Home Care in Laguna Beach has services provided for Parkinson’s patients in addition to Hospice Care, Cancer Care, and other senior and elderly care services.  A-1 Home Care also provide services in surrounding cites around Orange County such as Irvine, Newport Beach, Mission Viejo, Aliso Viejo, Laguna Niguel, Los Angeles, Costa Mesa, and Huntington Beach.
